fortunes supplying camel trains passing through from the ports
of Gujarat. Although the trading posts have long lost their importance,
such is the splendour of the havelis that the region has been dubbed
`the open-air gallery of Rajasthan'. The region also boasts the
obligatory Rajasthan fort, a couple of minor castles, distinctive
wells, chhatris (tombs) and a handful of interesting mosques. The
major towns are Fatehpur, Mandawa, Jhunjhunu and Sikar, all of
which have been by-passed by Rajasthan's tourist boom.

Mahal, Phool Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, the Sileh Khana and the Daulat

era. Later visit the Jaswant Thada - a cluster of royal cenotaphs

you stop at the 9th centaury Hindu Goddess Temple, popularly
know as “Magarmandi Mata Temple”. The architecture
has an influence of South India and the stones used here, having
high contents of iron are from Central India. The diversity in
art form is very intricate and unmatched. Once, a pride of an
Empire, it did not last long and met the same fate as the Somnath
temple, at the hands of the invading Muslims.
A new idol was placed in the destructed temple and animal sacrifice
went on till 1975, miracles still continue, take a WISH…..
Move on to Kheda, a Shepard settlement with a population of less
then two thousand People, where men spindle camel hair to make
rugs, the place around the village water tank, from where women
carry water on their head is full of activity in the mornings.
Just one family each of silversmith, clay potter, carpenter, cobbler,
blacksmith, etc, make this settlement self sufficient. Barter system
is still not uprooted.
Remarriage has always been prevalent here but a divorcee or a widower
can only marry a divorcee or a widow. A kilometer ahead starts

and war scenes, apart from festivals. Precious stones and mirrors
are embedded into the plaster. Inside the Fort visit the Jag Mandir

array of weaponry-pistols, blunderbusses, flintlocks, swords, rifles
and daggers. The royal families of Jaipur once used most of these
weapons. Later visit the Jantar Mantar, which is the largest stone
